Julie Parker - Musical Director

Julie Parker studied singing at the Royal Northern College of Music and trained as a teacher at Manchester Metropolitan University. She now works as a music teacher in several schools in Manchester and Salford and is the Project Manager for ‘Halle shine on Manchester IN Salford’. Julie also undertakes professional singing engagements and teaches singing privately at home. She is a member of the Association of British Choral Directors, and from 1994 to 2009 was the conductor of Manchester Girls’ Choir Junior Singers, and subsequently of Salford Youth Choir. She has conducted Urmston Choral Society since May 2009 and Irlam Male Voice Choir since March 2012.

Kathleen Hesford - Accompanist

Kathleen started playing the piano at 4 years of age and was accepted into the Junior Department of the then Royal Manchester College of Music at the age of 10.
She studied piano and flute, and gained a place at the RNCM upon leaving school. After graduating Kathleen specialised in accompaniment, studying with John Wilson and David Lloyd. She also gained her ARCO organ diploma.

Accompaniment has always been her first love and for many years she worked with The Manchester Boys Choir. She travelled extensively with them, performing in Canada, USA , Australia, Russia and many European cities.
Performances in the UK include appearances at The Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and for many years as the choir in residence at The Bridgewater Hall.
Kathleen accompanies the Greater Manchester Police Ladies Choir and Moorfield over 60s choir.
She is a répétiteur  for  the Cranleigh Choral week in Surrey, and accompanies at several local music festivals.
Kathleen teaches piano in Trafford as well as privately and works for Salford Music Service. Her association with Irlam Male Voice Choir has been a long and very happy one, beginning in 1975.

Dr John Stephens - President

John was born in Salford and went to school in Irlam before studying at the Universities of York, Leicester and Manchester. From the age of seven he was a cornet player with Irlam Band and he plays the piano.

He trained as a teacher and taught in Leicestershire and Manchester. He was head of a school in East Manchester. John has always
promoted the importance of music in education and he contributed to the national Music Manifesto.
He worked closely with the Halle and local music services to champion the importance of music in communities. After working as a
Director of Children’s Services in the Northwest, John is now a member of the Senior Civil Service with a national role in schools.

John is a Trustee of the John Greaves charity in Irlam and he is Chair of Trustees for the East Manchester Community Boat Project – a narrowboat charity that provides day trips for people with disabilities or facing disadvantage. He became Hon President of the Irlam Male Voice Choir in summer 2013.


Mr Phil Morris - Chairman 


Phil recently retired as a Trainer/Lecturer with the Police Service where he taught witness interviewing techniques.  He has been singing with Irlam Male Voice Choir since 2011. Phil is one of the choir's soloists and also sings with Urmston Choral Society and Werneth Swing Band.

Phil now works part-time as a Lecturer and provides training to individuals and organisations that focuses on the best practice in communicating with individuals with Autistic Spectrum Conditions.  Phil is also a Trustee of the award winning mental health charity Moodswings Network.
